San Antonio’s near east side has three multi family developments in the planning stages that could bring over 500 new living units to the area. The Merchants Ice House, Crockett Street Urban Lofts, and a mixed use at the GJ Sutton Complex represent over $240 million in investments.
The Merchants Ice House is a proposed mixed-use mixed-income re-development of a former ice house. Crockett Street Urban lofts would be all new construction, wrapping around The Vidorra condo tower. State Representative Ruth McClendon has filed a house bill proposing $162 million to repurpose the GJ Sutton Complex, a state owned facility. The state has approved funds to renovate the original structure on site and build a new office building and parking garage. This isn’t scheduled until 2020 however.
In February, City Council approved both the Merchant Ice House and Crockett Street Urban Lofts projects. Half of the over 530 proposed units between these projects would be for individuals making less than $50,000 per year. “All of these projects are going to be catalysts to fight this economic segregation that we have in San Antonio,” explained District 2 Councilman Alan E. Warrick.
