Witness something new in Bexar County?

PROJECT UPDATE: Hemisfair Civic Park Design

The city of San Antonio and the Hemisfair Civic Park design team are seeking the public’s assistance with designing the downtown park.  A presentation and public work session will be held 6-8 p.m. July 29 at The Depot at Sunset Station, 1174 E. Commerce St.  The San Antonio City Council, earlier this year, chose Seattle-based landscape architect Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) to design Hemisfair’s 8-acre civic park.  This will be in a series of three parks on the Hemisfair site.

The civic park is scheduled to open to the public in 2018 in time for a celebration of the city’s tricentennial and the 50th anniversary of the World’s Fair that gave rise to Hemisfair.  GGN is working with local firm Alamo Architects to lead a team of local and national design and engineering experts on the Hemisfair civic park development.  The non-profit Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation (HPARC) is spearheading the enhancements of the Hemisfair site.

City officials and representatives of HPARC have said the civic Bexar Witness Hemisfair Amphitheaterpark will serve as a “new front porch” of sorts for downtown San Antonio, and replace an outdated portion of Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.  Outgoing San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, recently confirmed as the U.S. Housing and Urban Development secretary, has said the Hemisfair civic park will be a centerpiece of the “Decade of Downtown.” This is an ongoing campaign symbolizing the transformation of central San Antonio as a vibrant core of urban living, recreation and new commercial opportunities.  A name for the civic park has not yet been determined. Other project consultants include Magnusson Klemencic Associates, Vickrey and Associates, CNG Engineering, Ximenes and Associates, Jaster-Quintanilla, Tillett Lighting Design, Drew Collaborative Works, Toole Design Group, CMS Collaborative, Theatre Projects Consultants, and ETM Consultants.
