The ownership group of North Central Baptist Hospital plans to invest in a $50 million three-story addition to the Stone Oak facility, which will result in 77,000 more square feet and room for a new orthopaedic institute. Officials with Tenet Healthcare Corp. say the expansion is necessary because of the continued growth in business and residential development throughout the Stone Oak area. This will be the Baptist Health System’s hospital’s second significant expansion in the last three years. The new orthopaedic institute will feature an 18-bed pre-operation center, a 15-bed post-anesthesia care area and a 30-bed inpatient unit, as well as 10 operation and recovery rooms. This would double the number of inpatient beds for various orthopedic surgeries done at the Stone Oak hospital.
The project will change the appearance of North Central Baptist Hospital and produce a new hospital entrance off Madison Oak Drive. Baptist Health System officials said the design will involve a more “hotel-like” environment for patients and staff, as well as for visitors. With the orthopaedic institute due to open up late in 2016, North Central Baptist Hospital will be able to offer various expanded services, including hand therapy, physical therapy, industrial rehabilitation, digital imaging, outpatient surgery and orthopaedic urgent care. Additionally, North Central Baptist will be able to introduce numerous new specialists in spinal procedures, total joint replacements and sports medicine to the area.
All of this, officials with Baptist Health Systems say, would help BHS to solidify its standing as a premiere organization with this extensive focus on orthopedics locally and in South Texas. The last expansion that took place at the 24-year-old North Central Baptist was in 2012 when the hospital underwent a $32 million expansion including the construction of multiple floors on top of the existing structure. Last year, the hospital opened a new floor dedicated to oncology. This is just the latest development in Stone Oak becoming a major hub for a variety of health care activity in San Antonio. Methodist Stone Oak Hospital opened in 2009 and has since undergone two large expansions.
