Residential Development Proposed in Former Quarry

The ever-expanding West/Northwest Side of San Antonio looks to be getting a few more significant development projects. Local developer Bitterblue hopes to get approval for a 490-acre residential project in a former quarry near The Rim. According to the San Antonio Express News, Bitterblue and the Rogers family, the owner of the abandoned quarry, seek to build 19 acres of multifamily space, 665 single-family lots, and a small amount of commercial office space around the quarry, near Intersection 10 and Loop 1604. The city’s Planning Commission meets this week to decide whether to change the quarry’s land use designation so that the project can proceed. The project would also need approval from the zoning commission.

The Rim/La Cantera area remains one of the hottest markets for new residential and commercial development in the San Antonio. Bitterblue hopes to break ground in 18 months or on the first phase of the project, which will take several years to build out. Bitterblue is currently developing another nearby residential project, Shavano Highlands. Bitterblue does not envision retail stores on the project site, but does plan for luxury home-type dwellings on large lots around the quarry’s rim. The project site would be located on the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone and near Camp Bullis. The developers have talked with officials from the Army training base and the San Antonio Water System. Reportedly, the project site will set aside several acres of green space next next to Camp Bullis and have trails linking to the Salado Creek Greenway.
