UIW Medical School Clears HDRC

The San Antonio Historic and Design Review Commission recently approved the concepts for several aspects for the University of the Incarnate Word’s extension campus at Brooks City Base.  The approved options, provided by TBG Partners landscape architects, are for exterior remodeling, landscaping, parking and street realignment.

They are part of the second and third phases of the ongoing renovation of existing infrastructure at the former Air Force base. The work includes reconfiguration of Dave Erwin Drive along the western border of the future School of Osteopathic Medicine.  The school will take up space in seven buildings of the former School of Aerospace Medicine. The new UIW school is slated to open in March 2017. McChesney Bianco Architecture is the architectural firm designing the project.

During their June 1 meeting, HRDC members expressed concern about the architects’ proposal to close off vehicular traffic on the southern end of Kennedy Circle and turn it into a pedestrian-friendly part of the future campus.  Commissioners disagreed with the idea of red brick pavers for the promenade and pedestrian-only parts of the circle. They wanted that area to stay gray in color, as it has been for decades. The architects saying the promenade and pedestrian-only parts would not be entirely made of red brick pavers, but that such accents would lend themselves to the development of an alluring, walkable portion of the campus.  Commissioners also approved the recommendation to renovate specific walls to allow for windows, which would permit more natural lighting into the renovated facility.

The American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, or COCA, granted UIW pre-accreditation for its new medical school.  That move permits UIW to immediately recruit students, with provisional accreditation status set for July 1.
