UNDER CONSTRUCTION: CRIT-TEXAS

CRIT-Texas is currently under construction and is expected to open by December 2014.  CRIT is an acronym for Center of Children’s Rehabilitation-Teleton, and is a business model that has seen great success in Latin America.  There are over 90 CRITs in Latin America with the capacity to treat over 1 million children.

CRIT centers serve children with neuromusculoskeletal disabilities and offer “therapeutic intensiveness, comprehensive and humane support, family presence and leading edge technology”, says Fernando Landeros, TeletonUSA Foundation President.  CRIT-Texas, located adjacent to Morgan’s Wonderland, a theme park designed specifically to be accessible to children with disabilites, will be the first in America and is expected to serve 600 patients a year.

What is unique about the CRIT model is that the facilities are almost entirely funded through telethons.  The $17 million facility is being funded by TeletonUSA’s 28-hour telethon in 2012, which aired on Univision.  The facility, expected to be complete by December 2014, will be the focal point of the nation wide TeletonUSA telethon this year.  Coincidentally, Morgan’s Wonderland also has a very unique funding source.  Gordon Hartman, former San Antonio home builder, now operates the non-profit that created Moran’s Wonderland as well as owns the San Antonio Scorpions soccer team.  All net profits from the team fund Morgan’s Wonderland, a first of its kind in the world of professional sports.
